Beautiful People #3 - Spoilers and Short Answers to Avoid Spoilers

And on to Beautiful People #3! (Series by Cait @ Paper Fury and Sky @ Further Up and Further In) It seems you all will know Dandy and Toru pretty well by the time this book comes out, ha ha.

1) What does your character regret the most in their life?

Spoilers! *throws confetti*

2) What is your character’s happiest memory? Most sorrowful memory?

Happiest - The first time she won a wrestling match against her brother.
Sorrowful - The day her mother died.

Happiest - Closing his first legal case.
Sorrowful - The day his father and brother died.

3) What majorly gets on your character’s nerves?

Dandy - People trying to tell her how she should live or what to do. She actually acts worse if someone tries.

Toru - Dandy.

4) Do they act differently when they’re around people as opposed to being alone? If so, how?

Dandy - She's much louder and more active around people. When alone, she tends to lounge and doze, even reading on occasion.

Toru - No, he's the same.

5) What are their beliefs and superstitions? (Examples: their religion or lack of one, conspiracy theories, throwing salt, fear of black cats.)

Dandy - She was raised on the beliefs of the Sanctum (a monotheistic religion), but switched to the Korinwanese view of gods after coming to the country since their gods aren't all knowing beings meant to help people. She believes that if Aisha really was merciful, She would have come to help her.

Toru - Typical Korinwanese beliefs in plentiful gods tied to locations and significant events or atrocities.

6) What are their catchphrases, or things they say frequently?

Dandy - "And that's how I got..." usually a scar or some other type of injury. She's full of random stories like that; featured in the book: how she got a scar on her ass and how she got a fake tooth.

Toru- *arches brow*

7) Would they be more prone to facing fears or running from them?

Dandy - It depends. If she's in a position where she feels she'll look weak, she'll face them, but otherwise she'll run.

Toru - It depends on whether or not he recognizes his fear as such - he'll always face them head on if he realizes he's afraid, but will subconsciously avoid them otherwise.

8) Do they have a good self image?

Dandy - No. She knows she's pretty, but thinks she's a horrible person undeserving of real affection. She thinks she's being realistic about her notoriously bad attitude, but people who have seen her good side would argue otherwise.

Toru - No. Due to his past, he thinks he's a failure who needs to reclaim his family's honor by avenging his father and brothers' deaths.

9) Do they turn to people when they’re upset, or do they isolate themselves?

Dandy - Isolates herself. She hates feeling vulnerable, especially in front of others.

Toru - Isolates himself. He feels that he needs to keep up his image as being reliable.

10) If they were standing next to you would it make you laugh or cry?

The answer is both for both because on the one hand they both had terrible things happen in their past which is kind of my fault for writing them that way, on the other hand they're hilarious to me, especially together, so...

Beautiful People #2 - Likes, Dislikes, Fears, and Dreams

Continuing with the second set of questions in the Beautiful People series by Cait @ Paper Fury and Sky @ Further Up and Further In, still with the main characters of Wildflowers Saga #2 - Dandy and Toru!

1) What’s their favourite food? (Bonus: favourite flavour of chocolate!)

Dandy - Rice and eggs. Raw eggs, that is. She eats it as her first meal of the day (sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon) and has a big appetite, so likes something she can load up on quickly. She prefers dark chocolate, liking the bitter bite.

Toru - Does tea count as a food? He likes his tea, sometimes forgoing breakfast entirely and just having a cup. He also prefers dark chocolate, because he doesn't really like sweet things in general.

2) What do they absolutely hate?

Dandy - Jeongwon. Some specific people, but more the country as a whole. After being a slave there, and while slavery exists in other places, she particularly hates the way Jeongwonee slaves are treated and how prevalent it is in the country.

Toru - Improvising. He was raised learning how to be an ordered person, and was able to make and keep to plans his entire life... until he started working with Dandy. While advanced planning and research are Toru's forte, he leaves most of the planning to Dandy since she knows how to gather information.

3) What do they enjoy learning about?

Dandy - Art. She actually really enjoys the subject, but doesn't go out of her way to lean more. Fortunately, she has some well versed friends willing to teach her.

Toru - Anything about the law - philosophy, loopholes, proceedings, etc. While he's been away from his work for a while, he stills likes to learn since it was something he used to do with his father.

4) Who is the most influential person in their life?

I would elaborate, but that would be spoilers - suffice to say, they are the most influential person in each others' lives (Dandy - Toru/Toru - Dandy).

5) What is their childhood fear?

Dandy - Nothing. Dandy was a fearless child that was always trying to outdo her brothers and other children.

Toru - Leviathans. His mother used to tell him scary stories about children getting dragged to the bottom of the ocean by them.

6) What is something they have always secretly dreamed of doing, but thought impossible?

Dandy - Visiting her mother's family. They lived in another country and she never met them.

Toru - He never considered any of his goals impossible, so I'll say his biggest dream was to take over as head of the Katowaro Clan and make his father proud.

7) What is something he is impractically afraid of?

Dandy - Emotional intimacy. She regularly pushes her friends away, though most of them understand why and are patient.

Toru - Disappointing his family. He's very proud of his family and what they stand for, especially his father's legacy, and worries that he can't live up to his name.

8) Are they a night owl or morning person?

Dandy - Night Owl. She's a party person, and likes staying up having a good time.

Toru - Morning Person. More by habit than inclination, he gets up very early to practice swordsmanship and meditate.

9) Do they say everything that pops into their head, or leave a lot unsaid?

Dandy - Zero filter.

Toru - Like pulling teeth.

10) What are their nervous habits?

Dandy - Biting the inside of her cheek, rubbing the back of her neck.

Toru - Being still and silent (so he doesn't accidentally bleat, which nobles consider uncouth).

Beginning a Series Late to the Party - Beautiful People #1

So while looking for more review blogs to submit my book to, I came across Paper Fury and the series they and Sky @ Further Up and Further In created called "Beautiful People". The idea is to answer questions about your characters and get to know them better, and while I am 4 years late to this party (which is sadly taking a hiatus of indeterminate length), I thought it would be a cool way to start talking about my new book - the sequel to Allaha of the Mountain, this book is still in Part I of the Wildflowers Saga and called Dandy.

Without further ado, jumping all the way back to the first post in June of 2014 (told you I was late), here are my answers about the two main characters of Dandy: Dandy and Toru.

1) What is their full name and is there a story behind why they got it?

Dandy "True Arrow"- her real name is Corrina, but she no longer uses it. When she was working as a prostitute in a brothel called the Garden, she was given the "stage name" of Dandelion, and choose to keep it after buying her freedom. "True Arrow" is her bounty hunter title. She earned it from convincing a mercenary company she was working with to shoot her out of a catapult to get her target from behind a siege and surviving.

Katowaro Toru the "Silent Sword"- it's just his family name. He comes from a high ranking noble family. "Silent Sword" is his bounty hunter title. He earned it from his sword being named "for the only thing it leaves in it's wake - Silence". His naturally stoic nature didn't hurt, either.

2) How old are they, and when were they born?

Dandy is 38 and was born in a Northern country called Dorbean. It's a forested region, and she comes from a small village.

Toru is 29 and was born in the country of Korinwa. Korinwa is a mountainous chain of islands that appear to resemble a crescent moon. He was born at his family's estate in the capitol of Eyota.

3) Describe their physical appearance. (Bonus questions: 1. What is their race/nationality/ethnicity? 2. Do you have a picture of them? If so, include it!)

I'll use the book descriptions here.

Dandy: "She had dark brown skin, and wavy blonde hair that cascaded around her shoulders. She glared around the room with eyes as green as fresh grass."

(She's also on the cover of the book, being the title character and all. Wonderful art by @karasawr!)

Toru: "The  man at the bar was Korinwanese. His face was long, resembling that of a sheep’s, with large spiral horns at either side of his head. Instead of hair, his head was covered in black wool. He had also combed out a beard, which he tied at the end with a small metal bead. His eyes were blue, with horizontal pupils. He wore a blue, long sleeve wrap shirt and dark pants made out of rough materials. His hands had only two fingers and a thumb, and he wrapped them around his drink as he watched the other patrons."

4) Describe your character’s personality first in one word, and then elaborate with a few sentences.

Dandy - Abrasive. Dandy is a hard person to get along with - she swears, she's an asshole, and a raging alcoholic. On the other hand, she tries to be a decent person when she can - she's just working through her own issues at the same time. A lot of her friends are in similar situations, and so are very patient with her.

Toru - Reserved. Toru is a man of few words - its actually really hard to portray a lot of his character motivations because he doesn't talk to the other characters a lot. He's still expressive in other ways, but being raised as a noble, he has a very serious demeanor and tends to play things close to the chest.

5) What theme song(s) fit their personality and story arc?

I actually have playlists for both of them, though it was easier to find songs fitting Dandy than those fitting Toru, which is why her list is longer. I did decide to cut out songs that were more atmospheric than character relevant for Dandy to try and keep a shorter list.

  • Casual Affair by Panic! At The Disco
  • Blah Blah Blah by Ke$ha
  • Blow by Ke$ha
  • Fear and Loathing by Marina and the Diamonds
  • I'm a Ruin by Marina and the Diamonds
  • Blue by Marina and the Diamonds
  • Aftermath by Adam Lambert
  • Broken Open by Adam Lambert
  • Pour Some Sugar on Me cover by Ninja Sex Party
  • Washington Square by The Correspondents
  • The Last Time by The Correspondents
  • Happier by A Fine Frenzy

  • Over by The Honors
  • Photobooth by The Staves
  • Hope for the Hopeless by A Fine Frenzy
  • Swan Song by A Fine Frenzy
  • The Emotion by B├śRNS

6) Which one of the seven deadly sins describes your character?

Dandy - Gluttony. She takes everything just a step further than she really needs to, and has a problem with excess.

Toru - Pride. Kind of an obvious one considering the other answers so far, but he does tend to let his social status and inherent responsibilities that come with it get in the way of more important things.

7) If they were an element (fire, water, earth, air), which one would they be?

Dandy - Fire. Though, to be honest, she tends to burn herself more than other people. She can still keep others warm with a good time, but it's best to keep your distance if you can't handle some heat.

Toru - Water. Generally steady and predictable, but able to change when something strong enough moves him. Once he comes to a decision, even changing his mind, he commits to it completely.

8) What is their favourite word?

Dandy - She hasn't put much thought into it, but probably "free".

Toru - Law. He grew up around the law and learning about laws, and finds comfort in the order they bring.

9) Who’s one person they really miss? (It could be someone who’s passed away, or someone they’re not close to anymore, or someone who’s moved away.)

Dandy - her mother, Lina. She died when Dandy was still young. Dandy was her only daughter, so she was a little spoiled despite being a wild child. Her mother encouraged her adventurous side, but tried to curb her bad habits.

Toru - his father, Tonnan. He was murdered, and Toru is currently on a mission to avenge his death. Growing up, Toru always wanted to be just like his father, and they had a close relationship before Tonnan's death.

10) What sights, sounds, and smells remind them of that person?

Dandy - Dandelions, actually - it's the main reason she adopted the name full time. Because of Dandy's green eyes and blonde hair (and how she "grew like a weed"), her mother jokingly compared her to the flower. Also chai tea - it was her mother's favorite.

Toru - Militia members - his family is head of the militia, a position his father was very proud of. The smell of books, paper, and ink reminds him of his father's office at home, where he spent a lot of time learning and watching his father work.

Beautiful People #8 - Siblings
